Disability and the Gifts of the Spirit: Pentecost Stand the Renewal of the Church
Requirements: Students will review chapters/articles available on Canvas and produce a minimum of 1250 words (1” margins, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, no title page, heading single spaced, text double spaced). Your audience should be imagined as adults of average to above average intelligence (pastors, parents, peers) who are not specialists in this field. You are writing for them and to them. This reading report should have two parts.
Part One: Summary. You are to briefly summarize any three (you can mix and match any three) articles/chapters linked below (do not use the Powell textbook or the Longenecker textbook for this assignment). Pay attention to the aims of each chapter/article. What is the author trying to communicate? How does the author go about making the argument? Read carefully and write concisely. Allot about 300-330 words per article/chapter (+/- 875-1000 words).
Part Two: Personal Appreciation or Evaluation of the Articles/Chapters. This is the place where you articulate in some detail what you feel are the merits and/or shortcomings of the book as a whole. What aspects of the book do you consider to be especially helpful or illuminating with regard to reading the New Testament? What aspects of the articles do you consider to be particularly troubling? Do you still have questions? What are they? Allot about 300 words (1 page) for this section (the total assignment should be about 1250 words).
Citation Style: Please use parenthetical references at the end of the sentences in question (when you quote, summarize or paraphrase). Example – De La Torre argues that interpretations of scripture that value or emphasize marginalized perspectives are of great importance (De La Torre, 34). ALL references need to have a page number(s). We are not using APA or MLA formatting, per se. Students need to include parenthetical references for the relevant texts and a basic "Works Cited" page at the end of the paper.
NOTE on Inclusive Language: As a department, we are committed to modeling and encouraging inclusive language in teaching and writing. Students are required to use gender inclusive language in their papers. For example: use humanity/humankind instead of man/mankind.
The assigned readings are: Three of the selected readings linked BELOW.
The Contextual Approaches report/assignment will link to Student Learning Outcomes 4 & 5.
